Another take on how to get VMware to work in Hardy Heron

I had found that the any-any patch works fine for me in VMware Server 1.0.5 (although I believe that 1.0.6 doesn't need any patch).
However, this link says that even the patch doesn't work with Ubuntu 8.0.4. Instead it recommends a more complicated fix.
Then the comments contradict this too.
