The End

Yes, sad to say this is going to be the last post in this blog which has been running since May 1, 2007 (more than 20 months).
Certainly, it hasn't set thew world on fire nor has it made me any money. But, it was never meant to. It was just a place for me to note interesting things I had seen on the net and would like to try out at a later stage.
However, the good news is that I'm going to replace this blog with this one in WordPress which I'm starting up primarily to get some experience in WP.
If you intend to follow along with me in this, expect to see quite a few changes over the first few weeks as I try out different options.

Vim -- want to know more?

Another great SimpleHelp tutorial on something I really need to know more about -- after all, seems that all the clever guys use this text editor.

Find free disk space in Linux

Another really great Linux tutorial from Sukrit Dhandhania of SimpleHelp. This guy is good.

Unlimited online storage -- and it's free?

Well, while it's in Beta anyway. Look here.

Cloud computing

AirSet looks very interesting. However, right now I'm not sure how it differs from other cloud apps such as EyeOS or Glide.
Need to look more closely at this.

Internet for kids

Maybe I should put this on Margaret's computer.

Nintendo on your Windows computer

Here's how. I'm sure Margaret will be interested in at least a few of these.

Magazines for free

Interested in reading some magazines for free on your computer?
Well, here's how and it's very easy and simple to do (in Firefox).
Unfortunately, the magazines are all rather shallow so there's actually nothing I'd even bother opening, let alone reading unless I was so overwhelmingly bored as to be on the verge of something catastrophic..

Email your question and receive answer within 30 seconds

Snapask....sounds very useful. I tried it out on my EeePC/Gmail and it worked perfectly. However, it couldn't find a dictionary definition for the word "obnoxious" and it provides weather information in Fahrenheit.

Find and Replace from CLI -- the SED command.

Another nice tutorial from SimpleHelp

Wednesday 24 December 2008

Create a slimmed down XP install disk.

This might be useful to make a bare-essentials VM or to install on a EeePC 701 (with just 4 GB).

CLI date set

Interesting article on how to set the date from the command line. Follow-on to similar article from SimpleHelp I posted a few days ago.

Want to know more about hard drives?

.........then you've come to the right place. Have a look at this Gizmodo article.

International radio

In theory, this could be very useful -- an online resource for finding and playing radio stations from anywhere.
Problem is, it doesn't seem to work. I tried five stations in a row and not one of them even gave an indication it was going to work. The 'troubleshooter' ("if you have a problem click here") told me to "try later" Yes, a big help.
Plus, it doesn't seem to work at all in Opera (although it certainly didn't work for me in Firefox either). Maybe what they meant to say was that it doesn't actually work at all for the moment but we need to be patient.

Time to look at Giver again

I had been very excited about giver a while ago but then I forgot about it. But as I've been using ssh/scp to transfer files between computers on my network, maybe it's time to give Giver another lease of life. Useful article on this from Tombuntu.

Avoid Flash install problems

Useful tip although I've never really had this problem. But you never know when it might occur

The Date command

Another simple Linux command with a lot of useful and interesting options.

Get more out of the FIND command

Nice tutorial from simpleHelp on how to make the Find command in *nix more flexible.

Use SSH and SCP without typing passowrd every time.

Useful, but haven't tried this yet.

Customized Gnome Panel clock.

Nice, but I was able to do all of these things before I made this adjustment. AFAICS, nothing new resulted.

File/folder compression and extraction in Linux

Very useful stuff well explained with examples by SimpleHelp

Improve YouTube video quality

Just add "&fmt=18" (without quotes) to the existing url for a video and often, not always, you'll see a significant quality improvement.
Here's an article on other ways to improve the picture quality.

Put a watermark on your photos -- tutorial

Thorough SimpleHelp tut.

Eterm -- can run this terminal without borders

Well, so what's the big deal about that? Anyway, it's available although from what I've seen I doubt if I'm ever going to use this.
