Find your Product version number
Here's a useful command I learnt about from here.
sudo dmidecode| grep Product
Note that the blog where I got it says it's for checking your Mac version.
But, not surprisingly, it works on my Dell desktop as well.
Running it on the Dell gives me
Product Name: Dimension 4550
which sounds right.
On the MacBook, I get
Product Name: MacBook2,1
Product Name: Mac-F4208CAA
Not sure why I get two product names and the blog post doesn't say anything about this.

I am not sure why the mac returns two lines either. I did know it did that, but from a Linux on Mac support role, usually we are just interested in the version number i.e. MacBook2,1 which is a 2nd generation MacBook. With that, we know exactly what hardware you have, and what guides to direct people to.
