Want to understand Git?

I have to admit I'm not sure why I need to understand Git but I have downloaded some Compiz Fusion stuff from Git (or so I thought).
Anyway, I see a lot of references to it so maybe I do need to at least have something on hand for when I finally realize what the big deal is.
